Fitted Wardrobes in Abingdon-on-Thames

Abingdon's housing stock splits roughly into three eras, and each one poses a different wardrobe problem. The timber-framed and Georgian houses around East St Helen Street and the Market Place have low door heads, sloped ceilings in the upper floors and box rooms that were never meant to hold a modern wardrobe. Standard flat-pack furniture simply will not fit through some of these doorways, let alone sit square in the room once it's inside.

Move out to the Victorian and Edwardian streets off Ock Street and Wootton Road and the problem changes. These houses usually have a decent chimney breast in the main bedroom, which leaves two alcoves either side that are almost never the same width. We measure each one independently rather than assuming a mirrored pair, so both wardrobe doors close the same even though the carcasses behind them differ by a few centimetres.

Out at Peachcroft, Northcourt and Dunmore, and in the newer estates on the town's edges, rooms are squarer and walls are straighter, but ceilings tend to be lower and floor space in second bedrooms is tighter. A lot of the work we do here is for families who have outgrown flat-pack storage and want full-height, wall-to-wall wardrobes that recover space rather than eat further into an already small room. Some of these households have someone working from Milton Park or Harwell Campus who has converted a box room into an office and needs the remaining bedroom storage rationalised into one proper run.

What Abingdon-on-Thames homes ask of fitted wardrobes

Working within Abingdon's town-centre constraints

Houses around the Market Place and East St Helen Street are often listed or sit within the conservation area, which affects what can be altered externally even though internal joinery is unaffected. Original floor structures in these properties can be uneven by a genuine margin over the width of a room, so we survey at several points rather than trusting a single tape measurement.

Low door heads and narrow stairwells in these older houses also mean carcasses sometimes need to be built in sections small enough to carry up through the house, rather than delivered as one large panel. We plan that at survey stage, not on the morning of delivery.

Alcove wardrobes in Victorian and Edwardian terraces

The chimney breast bedroom is the single most common layout we fit wardrobes into across Abingdon's older streets. Each alcove is measured on its own, at the top, middle and bottom, because a wall that looks straight to the eye can lean or bow by ten to fifteen millimetres over the height of the run.

Bay windows are also common in this part of town, and where a bedroom has one, the wardrobe run is set out to respect the window reveal rather than boxing awkwardly around it. Picture rails and coving are worked around, not covered, wherever the client wants to keep them.

Full-height storage for estate housing

In Peachcroft, Northcourt, Dunmore and the newer developments, rooms are more forgiving to work in, but ceiling height limits how tall a run can go before it looks oppressive. We design the internal layout to use every inch available up to that limit rather than leaving a gap at the top for the sake of proportion alone.

These are also the homes most likely to have thinner stud partition walls, so before anything is fixed back we locate the studs properly rather than relying on standard spacing, which keeps the fixing secure under the weight of a full hanging rail.

CAD design and workshop build

Every wardrobe starts as a CAD drawing showing the elevation and the internal split between hanging, shelving and drawers, agreed with you before any board is cut. Carcasses and doors are then built and sprayed in our own workshop at Blackbarn Farm in Ipsden, roughly twenty-five minutes from Abingdon.

That off-site build is what keeps the finish consistent regardless of which part of Abingdon we're working in: a controlled spray booth gives the same even, dust-free paint film whether the site is a Georgian terrace or a new-build estate house.

Why us here

Why Abingdon-on-Thames homeowners choose CZ Bespoke Carpentry

  • Alcoves measured individually

Chimney breast wardrobes are built to the true width of each alcove, common across Abingdon's Victorian and Edwardian streets, so both doors line up despite different carcass sizes behind them.

  • Experience with listed and conservation-area properties

Town-centre houses around the Market Place and East St Helen Street come with low door heads and uneven original floors, and we plan the build and delivery around those constraints from the survey visit.

  • CAD drawings before manufacture

You see the elevation and the internal layout on screen and approve it before we cut anything, so there are no surprises when the wardrobe arrives.

  • Sprayed in our own workshop

Doors and carcasses are finished in a controlled spray booth at Ipsden, giving a hard, even paint film rather than a brush-textured, site-painted finish.

  • Fully insured, fixed-price work

CZ Bespoke Carpentry carries £2m public liability insurance, and every quote is written and fixed before work starts, so the number agreed is the number paid.

Questions

Fitted Wardrobes in Abingdon-on-Thames: common questions

Do you fit wardrobes in listed houses in Abingdon town centre?
Yes, we regularly fit wardrobes in listed and conservation-area houses around Abingdon's Market Place and East St Helen Street, working within their low door heads and uneven original floors since the joinery itself is internal and unaffected by external listing restrictions.
How much do fitted wardrobes cost in Abingdon?
Fitted wardrobe cost depends on the size of the run, the internal layout and the finish specified, so we do not quote a flat figure; instead we survey the room and return a written fixed-price quote within 72 hours.
Can you build wardrobes either side of a chimney breast?
Yes, alcove wardrobes either side of a chimney breast are one of the most common jobs we do in Abingdon's Victorian and Edwardian streets, with each alcove measured independently so the finished doors match despite differing carcass widths.
How long does a fitted wardrobe take from quote to installation?
A fitted wardrobe typically takes around six weeks from an agreed order to installation, because the carcasses and doors are built and sprayed in our workshop before we bring them to your Abingdon home.
Will the wardrobe fit through narrow stairs in an older house?
Yes, wardrobes for older Abingdon houses with narrow stairwells are built and delivered in sections sized to fit through the actual doorways and staircases, a detail we plan for at the survey rather than discovering on delivery day.
