Harwell is really two places for a carpenter. There is the historic village, with thatched and timber-framed cottages, orchards and lanes off the High Street, and there is the modern Harwell that has grown around the science campus, including the large new developments at Great Western Park and Valley Park on the Didcot side.
The work those two produce could hardly be more different. In the village it is scribing, matching and working around structure that has been there for centuries. On the newer estates it is making a well-insulated but generically finished house feel individual, upgrading trim and doors, adding panelling, and building storage into rooms that are efficient rather than large.
Harwell is about twenty-five minutes from the workshop at Ipsden, so it sits at the edge of our regular patch rather than in the middle of it. We plan visits and deliveries accordingly and are straight about it: the site visit is still free, the quote still comes back within 72 hours in writing, and we do not take on jobs we cannot service properly.

Local conditions
Chalk downland ground, a historic core and a large volume of very recent construction: the problems here split cleanly along those lines.
Recently built houses lose a great deal of moisture in their first couple of years. Timber studs shrink, plaster cracks at junctions and skirting can lift slightly off the wall as the structure settles.
We allow for that movement: fixings that hold as things shift, scribed joints instead of relying on caulk to bridge a gap, and where a house is very new, advice on which work is better done now and which is better left another season.
Modern estate bedrooms are sized closely to what the plan needs. A freestanding wardrobe often cannot open fully, and the space around it is unusable.
Fitted joinery reclaims that. Doors sized to actually open in the available swing, or sliding fronts where they cannot, plus full-height carcasses that use every inch of the wall from skirting to ceiling.
Thatch, timber frame and lime plaster all need to breathe. Sealing joinery hard against those surfaces traps moisture in exactly the material you least want to damage.
Built-ins for these properties are held off the wall, ventilated, and fixed with as few permanent penetrations into historic fabric as the job allows. Any listed building consent needed is the homeowner's responsibility to arrange.
The complaint we hear most from Great Western Park and similar developments is that the house is comfortable but characterless, every room the same white box with the same thin trim.
Wall panelling, upgraded skirting and architrave, solid internal doors and a well-designed media wall address that quickly and without structural work. It is also the fastest work we do, since there is no six-week furniture build in the way.
